Super six show equals record

by FIFAworldcup.com

Argentina have only once scored six goals in a FIFA World Cup match before. It came in their own tournament in 1978 when they beat Peru 6-0 in Rosario in the final game of the second group stage.

Needing to win by four goals to go through and meet Netherlands in the Final, Cesar Luis Menotti's men managed to go two better, Mario Kempes and Leopoldo Luque both scoring twice.

Today’s defeat of Serbia and Montenegro was also the first time they have scored three goals in the first half of a FIFA World Cup game since 1930 when they beat Mexico 6-3 in Montevideo. On that occasion the first three goals all arrived inside the opening 17 minutes.

The two-goal haul from Argentina midfielder Maxi Rodriguez was the seventh occasion in the first 21 matches of this competition that one player has scored twice in the same game. While the two late strikes by Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi were the first FIFA World Cup goals for both players.

It was the worst FIFA World Cup defeat for Serbia and Montenegro. The previous worst came in 1930 when eventual champions Uruguay defeated the former Yugoslavia 6-1 in the semi-final.
