meeting #2 summary: navigation content and design

A major thank you for all who gave their time to this meeting. There was strong consensus regarding the header, and we managed to vote on the drop down menu and languages.

SUMMARY

1. Languages
- either a bar along the top menu (akin to the bottom nav) OR some type of component (language tag cloud, scrolldown). The dropdown menu stays. If you still have additional thoughts on the language component, please contact Kate or myself.

2. Header
- keep login/join, logout, search
- remove about us (to nav tab) what's hot (to MyTIG), for educators (to front page component/tab)
- keep site map??

3. Drop Down Menu/Tabs merged (ie tabs will have drop down via ajax)
- Logout Nav = #tools - resources - about us#
- Login Nav = # tools - resources - MyTIG - about us - Educators - country site (flags) #
- themes will be present in the drop down menu or drop down cells through colour coding
pages that overlap (e.g. gallery) will be listed in both menus

4. Bottom Nav
- remains unaddressed; pls comment if you have pressing issues with the current bottom nav

meeting #1 summary

Thanks to all who were able to come out. We were able to reach the consensus that we need to emphasize both our tools/more specific functions (e.g. post a blog vs. interact with other members) and the TIG experience.

Front Page:

If a component has not been mentioned, it will be cut from the front page.

- less text! (currently overwhelming, eye tends to skim over blocks of text)
- large, visible, scrolldown language component (current language drop down menu ineffective, different languages may help differentiate TIG from other sites)
- redesign JOIN component, focus on verbs, possible icons? (needs to be clearer and more visually obvious)
- 3 spotlights (visually appealing, ability for TIG to speak with members directly, shows TIG’s emphasis on social activism)
- ONE sentence to explain TIG in accessible language (possibly with links to our themes; also, since this is going to be quite challenging, I’m planning to put possible sentences on this blog so we can all bicker over it ;))
- “member map” with # of users. Click the globe on the “members online” component for example (visually appealing, showcases our international community)
- expand member stories component to a “nest” or “member cloud” (will show by example, the integration of tools on TIG, our resources, interactivity)
- option to visually change logo (like google)

MyTIG:

- login takes user directly to MyTIG (intermediary page unnecessary)
- central section a semi customizable feed replaces components
- spotlights demoted to sidebar as randomized banners (maintain communication with users, esp for those permanently logged in)
- spotlight above feed (?) that TIG staff may turn on/off
- smaller components: TIGmessages, birthdays, your content, recently viewed, what’s hot/new, recommendations (books? profile?)
