GYCA Launches New Website and Brand Design

The Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA) is pleased to announce the launch of its redesigned website, www.gyca.org. The new site design is structured to make information and opportunities easily accessible to the international GYCA community, enabling members to take full advantage of GYCA’s tools and resources and connect to other young HIV and AIDS activists.

The user-friendly layout of the GYCA’s website will strengthen the capacity of young people to navigate our resources, contribute their own content, and streamline collaborative efforts to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS. You'll find GYCA’s newest opportunities, news, research, communications, and resources tailored to the meet needs of young advocates, activists, adult allies, and NGO partners.

The site, which features the integration of web 2.0 tools including Twitter, Facebook , YouTube and Flickr, is designed to maximize interactivity for our members. Other exciting revisions include:

• A "Get Involved" page, which describes 7 ways that young people can take action and become engaged GYCA members;
• The ability to spotlight key members on the homepage, including E-Course participants, Small Grantees, and Regional and National Focal Points (RFPs/NFPs);
• An improved “About Us” section, to identify points of contact for those interested in learning more about GYCA’s regional work; and
• Detailed programs pages, which outline “How To’s” on ways to engage in GYCA’s E-course, Small Grants, and Focal Points programs

These dynamic features and tools showcase our ongoing commitment to youth leadership and activism, political advocacy, and information sharing.

Check out the new-and-improved site at www.gyca.org. Spend some time looking around and let us know what you think! This is the initial launch of the core programmatic pages, so keep your eye over the coming weeks as new pages are added with increased capabilities and updated resources.

We’re excited and grateful to share our new and expanded platform with you, and we look forward to connecting with you soon!

5th National AIDS Conference in Nigeria
The 5th National Conference on HIV/AIDS with the theme “The Nigeria HIV Response: Ownership and Sustainability” is taking place in Nigeria between 2nd -5th May 2010 and is hosted by the Network for HIV/AIDS Research in Nigeria (NARN). This conference is bringing together policy makers, donors partners, researchers, clinicians, CBOS, NGOs, FBOs, and other relevant stakeholders from within and outside the country to address contemporary issues on the epidemic and national response strategies in the control of the disease. Over twenty GYCA members were from Nigeria were sponsored by United Nations Population Fund to participate in the conference.

Also during the conference UNFPA in collaboration with UNAIDS, Network on Sex Work Projects (NNSWP), Society for Women and AIDS in Nigeria (SWAA-N) Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), International Community of Women Living With HIV/AIDS in Nigeria(ICWN) will be hosting a satellite session on Most-At- Risk Populations (MARPs) on May 4th, 2010. The theme is “Scaling up HIV Prevention among Most-At-Risk Populations in Nigeria”. The need for the session arose as a result of the higher HIV prevalence among certain groups in Nigeria which indicates that while Nigeria’s HIV epidemic may be classified as “generalized” the unequal distribution of HIV among sub-population groups mean that Nigeria’s epidemic shares characteristics with the concentrated epidemics of other countries (IBBSS, 2007). Current HIV prevalence among MARPS in Nigeria ranges from 37.4% for brothel-based sex workers, 30.2% for non-brothel based; 13.5% for MSM, 3.1% for the armed forces to 3.5% for the police force. Transport workers and IDUs share 3.7% and 5.6% respectively.
During the session, the following questions will be addressed.

• What does this mean for Nigeria?
• Are we prioritising MARPS enough in the national response?
• What interventions have worked and what have not?
• What can we do differently?

Daily updates of the conference proceedings will be posted on the listserves.
