GYCA/IAVI CONDUCT WORKSHOP ON “YOUTH ENGAGEMENT IN NEW PREVENTION TECHNOLOGIES”

The Global Youth Coalition on AIDS (GYCA)…a member of the ICASA YouthFront, in partnership with the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), conducted a training workshop on youth engagement in new prevention technologies to HIV/AIDS on 28th and 29th September, 2013. Happening in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at the sidelines of the ongoing ICPD Africa Regional Review Dialogue, the training is bringing together young leaders from across the GYCA network on the continent, members of the ICASA YouthFront Steering Committee and IAVI.

Discussions on “New Prevention Technologies – NPTs” for HIV/AIDS have sparked great interest among the participants. Presentations delivered showed current progress in development of NPTs. They looked at the challenges and efficacy of existing technologies and approaches, and opportunities and evidences ongoing processes.

The discussions on NPTs have been exciting and enlightening for me. I have been inspired to take action as a young person. The science looks real and we are faced with an opportunity to end AIDS in our lifetimeChristian Zimbizi, GYCA – Zimbabwe

The training looked to identify issues pertinent to young people in promoting NPTs. Participants developed advocacy messages and a campaign to increase awareness, understanding and action. More discussions and activities on NPTs are expected at the coming ICASA Youth Pre and Main Conference.
