Building capacity of girls to reduce their vulnerability to abuse and HIV/Aids
Related to country: Malawi

For the past two weeks, we have trained 20 more girls on adolescent reproductive health and HIV/Aids, totaling our number to 52 girls. These short trainings to be provided in series will help to equip the target girls with skill and abilities regarding their sexuality and well being. We believe informed girls will be able to protect themselves and prevent exposure to HIV. These girls will be able to make wise choices and reduce their vulnerability to abuse and HIV/AIDS infection.

Participation girls also had an opportunity to share real life experiences on their sufferings and problems and explored ways and means on how best to overcome their problems. Meanwhile each club has been given netball to enhance their frequency of meeting and also to be preparing for Girls Empowerment and HIV/AIDS prevention tournament scheduled in November and finals to take place on 1st December, 2008 (World Aids Day). Participating girls are currently composing songs carrying information about HIV/Aids, gender and women rights in preparation to community mobilization and sensitization campaign activities to be conducted between October-November 2008.

Morale continues to mount amongst girls in our target area as more girls want to join the clubs and be part of this initiative.

I have leant that given an opportunity girls can do wonders and that problems girls are facing can better be solved by girls themselves. Participating girls are exploring on survival options that does not put their lives at risk.

hi all

Hi Dear All, grantee and participants of the international AIDS conference, although I was unable to go there because I did not apply I could get the day to day progress of the conference through the GYCA and other international medias. Aleza I did post the blog late from the date because I was out of office.

When I come to my point we have started working selection of children who are going to take part in our program since we have to address different groups the students are comprised from disabled, female and more, we were asking their interest before being included in the project.
Currently we do have recruited all students (30) on wards now we will distribute all necessary materials to deliver it successfully.

One love

VCT Campaign project,18th August Blog

Hi everyone!
I hope you are all ok.
Today I want to share with all of you what surprised me during implementation of my project activities. It was not only a surprise but also a lesson and an experience.

Starting the project activities it was planned to start with training of volunteers and then shift with a home-based campaign(an outreach campaign where project volunteers will make house calls providing comprehensive information about HIV and encouraging family members to go to a VCT location).

But on the first day, after initiating a youth anti-AIDs club in MUBUMBANO sub sector, the first suggestion received from the club's members was to train them on Reproductive health, and AIDS."As members of an Anti-AIDS Clubs in our village,we should be provided sufficient knowledge on AIDS than others and before "said one of the anti-AIDS club members. For me it was not easy to reject a such suggestion and after discussions with different people we decided to start with village sessions instead of the home-based campaign.

This suggestion impressed me very much.It seems simple but it is not.
After few days,I realized that starting with village sessions will help us to know much about our target group and this will help us selecting families to be visited during the home-based project. And during the home-based we will visit people we will have met before i.e.we know each other.

What is your point of view?

Talking with Young Women

Hi,

We are busy in talking with Young Women about HIV/AIDS.

We are conducting a survey among young women to know about the knowledge, attitudes and perception of young women about HIV/AIDS. It's a great experience to come through different ideas of young women about HIV/AIDS.

Sincerely,

Gulalai
