Abia PDP turns to God for justice
Wednesday, Jun 20, 2007
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abia State chapter, has taken its quest for justice in the April 14, 2007 Governorship elections in the state to God through prayers. Women Wing of the party is spearheading the divine quest for the restoration of the € ¦’³stolen€ ¦’´ Abia PDP mandate with praying and fasting sessions, aimed at moving God to touch members of the Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia to do justice to the petition of its governorship candidate, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu. The women expressed confidence in the ability of the tribunal to do justice to Ugochukwu€ ¦’²s petition, but said they needed prayers in order not to be confused. € ¦’³We are praying that God must touch the heart of the authorities to know what to do to restore peace in Abia by restoring our (PDP) mandate,€ ¦’´ said Abia PDP women leader, Barrister (Mrs.) Nnenna Obewu-Onwuka, during a one-day prayer session tagged € ¦’³Abia PDP Women Solemn Assembly Against Occultic Governance.€ ¦’´ € ¦’³The case is before
the tribunal. Outside the tribunal matter, we know that God is in a position, because He is God, to restore our mandate,€ ¦’´ Mrs Obewu-Onwuka added during the event which took place at the country home of Ugochukwu Friday. She stressed that Abia PDP was not diabolical, pointing out that since the women believe in God and prayers being the only € ¦’³telephone line to God, € ¦’³ the women were confident that Abia PDP would reclaim its stolen mandate.€ ¦’´ Other women leaders who spoke to newsmen during the prayer session include Chief (Mrs.) Victoria Akanwa, a former commissioner in the state and Mrs Oluchi Eheahuzu. They opined that Abia needed salvation because it has been in bondage which was responsible for its backwardness in development and other sectors. Earlier in his Sermon, Rev. Benson Ezem, noted that the battle for validation of PDP victory in Abia was between the forces of light and darkness, adding that since God stands for light, PDP would get justice. € ¦’³What
you are doing today is that you are standing against evil. God is going to answer us because he has mercy on the land,€ ¦’´ Ezem said. The prayer session featured praise worship songs, intercessory prayers and procession by the women.

Nwadike is quietly welcoming AWUSA and their Separate parts into the POLITICS of REAL NIGERIA..
When these crooks used to run all over south, get the lots and ship them NORTH to AWUSALAND... there was peace in Heaven.
Now these people have been restricted some how to their states with not too much allowance across for interstate robbery. They have settled home to rob that used to enjoy their trophies from the south!.
We have been battling these people for over 50 years in the South, they have sharpened their skills which state people are getting a first hand look at.
They should start speaking out on how we IGBO has been robbed and the loot used to keep them alive. We even went to war over this.
With time , these they might even join MOSSOB and we will go after these hooded crooks.
They should stand up and not be intimidated. ..At least..BABA from the South has killed off many of the other gangs and their leaders..... ....But there are still some left with their off-springs. .
With time..AWUSA will be begging the SOUTH to leave them alone to South out their problems by themselves. But we Southern BUSY BODIES will be allover these problems and will not let go...will be fanning the fire!
The next will be NUPE + AWUSA vs FULANI
MEND will have a lot of un-used arms to ship north..
There was atime the whole NORTH used to put up one FAKE frontal ASSAULT against SOUTH...not anymore.... Civilization has reached every emirate....many people are now on the know.

Obasanjo, Kingibe clash
By Kunle Oderemi, Dayo Thomas, John Alechenu and Francis Fashola
Published: Sunday, 1 Jul 2007
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babagana Kingibe may have disagreed over the appointment of ministers by the Umaru Yar€ ¦’²Adua administration.
Sources informed Sunday Punch that Obasanjo is reportedly against the nomination of Kashim Imam, for a ministerial post by Borno PDP stakeholders, including Kingibe.
Imam, a former Presidential Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, was the PDP governorship candidate in the April 14 poll in Borno State.
Obasanjo was said to have favoured a lawmaker in the last dispensation, Senator Sanusi Daggash, instead of Imam as the ministerial nominee for Borno.
According to the sources, one of the leading Northern industrialists in the country, who is very close to Obasanjo, actually nominated Daggash.
A source claimed that Imam had expected an express endorsement of his candidacy by Obasanjo, having enjoyed a good working relationship with the former leader.
It was gathered that many PDP leaders from the North-East were unhappy over what they perceived as a deliberate attempt to impose Daggash on them.
€ ¦’´We are not happy over the overbearing influence of outsiders in determining who represents the state in the next cabinet. We have many distinguished persons, who are qualified to be ministers but we have a tradition in Borno. You are not allowed to lobby for positions. Instead, we leave the elders to handle the thing,€ ¦’´ the source said.
€ ¦’´That is why we have allowed Babagana Kingibe, who is our elder to pick who represents us, but both Obasanjo and an industrialist are bent on imposing their candidate on us now.€ ¦’´
It was learnt that a former governor of the state who was also a minister was miffed by the action of the former president and the industrialist because the stakeholders had decided on the choice of Imam for the ministerial appointment.
Sources claimed that the leaders had reached out to some influential institutions in the North to intervene in the matter because € ¦’´nothing should be done to deny the people their right as the citizens of the country.€ ¦’´
However, they were reportedly being cautious in pursuing their demand so that the € ¦’´PDP leadership does not see us as dissidents.€ ¦’´
€ ¦’´We are fully aware of how some party leaders tried to blackmail the former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani, because of his remarks on the conduct of the April elections in the country,€ ¦’´ the source added.
€ ¦’³Though nobody can intimidate us, we do not want anyone to accuse us of engaging in anti-party activities.€ ¦’´
The Special Adviser to the SGF, Dupe Ajayi, declined comment on the matter on Saturday because of the nature of the issue involved.
She said, € ¦’³The Secretary to the Federal Government is not in town at the moment and I will not be able to comment on the issue because it is a political matter. I will need to get in touch with him to clarify the issue.€ ¦’´
Findings by our correspondents also indicated a row among some PDP leaders in Adamawa State over the ministerial nominations for the state.
There were claims that a powerful clique in the party had tampered with the initial list of nominees sent to the higher authorities in Abuja for consideration.
The minorities in particular reportedly accused the clique of undermining the popular choice of all the stakeholders in the state.
It was gathered in Abuja on Friday that in response to a request by President, Umaru Musa Yar€ ¦’±Adua that governors should forward a list of nominees for ministerial appointment, the state governor, Murtala Nyako, sent three names.
The names were: former labour leader and governorship aspirant in the state, Comrade Paschal Bafyau; former Lagos Military Administrator and presidential aspirant, Brig.-Gen Buba Marwa (rtd); and Dr. Idi Aliyu Hong, who is the party€ ¦’±s state secretary and a Personal Assistant to Senator Jubril Aminu.
A leading member of the PDP from the state said on Saturday that there was growing tension among the people because some power brokers in the PDP tampered with the initial list.
€ ¦’´We heard that one Hassan Tukur, a career diplomat, who was not on the list has been picked. We, the minorities in the State, feel that we have been short-changed by our Hausa-Fulani kinsmen,€ ¦’´ the source added.
The source said the only thing the original nominees had in common was that they were all minorities in the state, adding that only one of them is a Christian.
He said, € ¦’´Before the last governorship elections, our Muslim brothers appealed to us to consider the fact that Mr. Boni Haruna, a Christian, was governor for eight years, as such we should support a Muslim candidate to take over from him. We agreed in the spirit of togetherness. That was why even when Joel Madaki, the former party chairman defected to the Labour Party and contested against Nyako, his kinsmen went for Nyako.€ ¦’´
The source argued that ethnic and religious considerations were relegated to the background during the struggle to whittle down the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the state.
Meanwhile, President Umaru Yar€ ¦’±Adua may not have sent the list of nominees for ministerial appointments to the security agencies.
A source told our correspondent on Saturday that the list was being delayed partly by the ongoing talks on the formation of government of national unity by the President.
It was leant that the Action Congress might get one ministerial slot if it accepted to be part of the GNU, while the All Nigeria Peoples Party would get two ministerial slots.
The list was also being bogged down by acrimony among some PDP controlled states because of the attempt by some party leaders to favour their candidates.
However, it was learnt that the Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Yakubu Saminu, was among key names being tipped for a ministerial appointment.
He reportedly insisted that he be given the portfolio of minister of Finance or the Federal Capital Territory.
But a clique in the PDP tipped the former Lagos State governor, Marwa, for the FCT portfolio.
Among the other touted names for ministerial nominees were the former PDP governorship candidate for Yobe State, Alhaji Adamu Waziri; Ahmed Nadada and Aliyu Modibbo.
In Niger State, a group, the Concerned Nupe Network, has petitioned Yar€ ¦’±Adua over the ministerial nominee for the state.
The group, in a letter dated June 28, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent in Minna on Saturday, accused the immediate past governor of the state, Alhaji Abdulkhadir Kure, of single handedly nominating Alhaji AbdulRahman Hassan Gimba for the ministerial slot from the state.
The group€ ¦’±s protest, it was learnt, was not unconnected to the alleged consensus given to Kure by the President to nominate a person for the ministerial slot in the state.
Yar€ ¦’±Adua, who was said to have earlier promised Kure a ministerial appointment in appreciation of the former governor€ ¦’²s contribution to his emergence in the 2007 general elections, had to give the fresh concession to Kure in view of the decision of the administration not to give ministerial position to any of the immediate past governors.
The CNN in its letter titled: € ¦’´Re: Ministerial nomination from Niger State (Barrister Abdulrahman Hassan Gimba,€ ¦’´ argued that the nominee was an indigene of Kogi and so should not represent the state.
The group€ ¦’±s letter, signed by its chairman, Alhaji Idris Gana and Secretary, Mr. Joshua Kolo, was addressed to Yar€ ¦’±Adua through the Governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu and the Chairman of the state€ ¦’²s Council of Chiefs and Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.
The group stated, € ¦’´Kure selfishly collaborated with an elder statesman to nominate Gimba without due consultations with stakeholders and party members.
€ ¦’³The nomination is not in the interest of the entire Nupe race. Bida Emirate has been completely schemed out of the political leadership of the state.€ ¦’´

In what party faithful may regard as € ¦’³apostasy€ ¦’´, National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmadu Ali, has condemned certain aspects of the economic reforms carried out by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying he was never in support of those policies.
Specifically, Ali said he was opposed to the privatisation and sale of some national assets and the removal of subsidies, especially in the agricultural sector.
He said the informal economy have been adversely affected by the removal of subsidies and given the rising level of the country's population and the need to produce more, there was need to encourage the sector.
He said even Western countries and multilateral donor organisations know the implications of leaving everything to market forces and as such have allowed agricultural subsidies to remain in their countries.
Speaking yesterday at the PDP national secretariat when the Economic Institute Worldwide presented him the fellowship of the organisation, Ali said he was also opposed to the privatisation of unity schools.
Privatisation of government-owned assets and removal of subsidies were an integral part of the economic reforms embarked upon by the administration of Obasanjo and avidly promoted by the PDP.
The selling point of the party's manifesto used in canvassing votes in the last general election is anchored on some of these policies and Ahmadu Ali was actively involved in the frontline of the nationwide campaigns during which President Umar Yar'Adua promised to continue the reforms.
Obasanjo is now chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, the organ touted as the conscience of the party that ensures that policy directions are implemented by government.
Ali€ ¦’²s comment is similar to that made by his predecessor, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who lambasted Obasanjo€ ¦’²s economic advisers for alleged anti-people policies which he said would not win elections. Ogbeh made the statement while he was chairman of the party, a position he lost in controversial circumstances after falling out with Obasanjo.
Ali was not specific on the national assets whose privatisation he opposed, although there have been controversies over the sale of Apo Quarters to federal lawmakers, a situation that has left most of the current lawmakers without accommodation. The monetisation programme was criticised because government officials who implemented the policy also benefited from the sales of government houses to the occupiers.
The last-minute sale of refineries by the Obasanjo administration was one of the causes of the industrial action embarked upon by organised labour last month.
The move by the last administration to privatise the nation's unity schools, under a public-private partnership arrangement, attracted a lot of criticisms.
Many argued that the education sector is in a shambles as a result of gross under funding and not just the problem of management as alleged by the former Education Minister, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili.
She had stoutly defended the policy, saying that less than 120,000 students were in the unity schools as compared to over nine million in other schools. According to her, € ¦’³between 2000 and 2004, only seven schools out of the 65 reporting schools recorded 50 percent and above in the West Africa School Certificate examinations€ ¦’´ . She also said € ¦’³about 15 percent of the Unity Schools students passed up to five credits in the same examinations for the past five years, even in the face of increase in funding to the schools in the same period for the unity schools€ ¦’´.

Obasanjo continues to hold court in Otta Meets Kupolokun, Ribadu
By Tashikalmah Hallah, Abuja & Olumide Bajulaiye, Lagos
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has continued to hold court at his Ota and Ita Eko residence. He met on Monday with the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Company (NNPC), Engr. Funso Kupolokun.
He was also said to have met with the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], Assistant Inspector General of Police, Nuhu Ribadu, however it was not clear what was the topic of their discussion.
However, Daily Trust learnt that Ribadu lately was having problem with government.
He had therefore ran to Otta to enlist the support of the former president to keep his job.
The EFCC boss was not available last night for comment. The meeting took place separately Daily Trust learnt.
On Sunday the former president, had met with the governors of the South-West where he pleaded with them not to fail him.
Obasanjo was said to have discussed with NNPC managing director the alleged possible relocation of the state Mega-Station, which is constructed on the land that shares boundary with the Presidential library, his pet-project.
Daily Trust gathered that the meeting was first held at his private residence, Ita Eko and later shifted to the site of the property, which is situated along IBB Boulevard, near the M.K.O Abiola stadium Kuto.
Mr Kupolokun was shown the site of the filling station for practical assess-ment of the area, which former President wanted the mega-station be relocated to pave way for the expansion of his library project.
A source said the expan-sion is meant to accommodate the children park section of the Multi-Billion naira project, which commenced last year with the raising of about N7b.
The present site of the mega station it was further revealed would be most suitable for the proposed children section due to topography balance it enjoys, hence the idea to relocate the station.
According to a source close to the former president, the land was given to the NNPC to construct the Mega station in 2004, even though the franchise of the station that has brought relief to motorists since it commenced operations is still shrouded in controversy.
Since inception, the mega-station has been a major relief to motorists, particularly the commercial vehicles operators plying the intra and intercity routes in the state. When the price of petrol was raised from N63.50 to N75 in May and it led to the strike by Labour, which again led to the scarcity of the product and it was being sold as high as N150 per litre in the state; the station was selling at the new price.
This development often leads to unprecedented queues at the station, while some motorists would prefer to sleep at the station, with the assurance that they would get petrol at the recommended price. If the alleged plan to relocate the station becomes a reality, there is a strong indication that the mega station might have to be moved to the old Abeokuta/Lagos road area.

Hurricane In The Rose Garden
|
This is a reminder please.
Pascal Atumah's wonderful film has been picked to be screened at the Director's Guild. That in itself is a great achievement. The Director's Guild doesn't just pick any film to screen where the works of the likes of Steven Spielberg are screened. It is the next step to a mainstream distribution. But to accomplish that, he needs our support. The potential distributors who will be there need to see that his people have come in full force to support his
film. I saw the film at the Pan African Film Festival, and I will see it again. Directed by a young and very talented Director, Ime N. Etuk, Hurricane In The Garden touches all of us in the Diaspora, and should be of interest to all of us.
Please call (310) 289-5366 or email danielt@dga. org .
Please note that it is free, underwritten by the DGA. But you must call for reservations as soon as possible before it is full. Check for more details in the attached flyer.
