Greetings all from Bali,
A busy day in the life of a COP/MOP UN campaigner is once again under way. The international youth networking and actions are happening hard and fast here and hopefully hitting the press papers at home as well!
Before diving into a few of yesterday's happenings...
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Development/Developing countries is a hot topic here in Bali. The conference has it high on the agenda and is particularly relevant seeing as where this country is held - Indonesia a high contributor to global deforestation levels. At 1.15pm outside the main conference hall traditional Balinese dancers performed an amazing interpretive dance calling for strong action on deforestation. (Pictures to follow) Developing countries are on a broad scale struggling to get deforestation under control due to job security and economic concerns and obviously a range of others. REDD needs urgent action if we are to globally tackle climate change. It seems to be an issue the developing countries in particular are having difficulty addressing - lets hope for real solutions this time around.
Following this performance was the International Youth Action for the day - presenting our Emergency Climate Kit. From Malaria pills to a little fan to keep us cool - unfortunately it will be needed if all of us don't act to stop the impending climate change.
Yesterday inaction was featured in the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) Plenary. Technology transfer which enables developing countries to receive clean technology is an important issue at this Conference of the Parties however not one worth spending a day and a half on deciding whether it would be on the agenda. Clearly this issue needs to be discussed as it allows the opportunity for international cooperation in development of clean technologies. G-77 (a block of developing countries) and Saudi Arabia spent over 1.5 days arguing with the Chair over procedural matters - aren't we trying to save the planet!?
We don't have time for this inaction - act to save our planet today!
A few random comments amongst a busy day - Cheers, Nathan
