Summary of EATLF online discussion on management issues for telecentres

Telecentre practitioners highlighted need for proper identification of community needs, strategic planning and capacity building as some of the solutions to the management challenges facing telecentres today.
This was during the second week of the East Africa Telecentre Leaders Forum (EATLF) online session discussing management issues of telecentres on the ugabytes maling list.

Nabweru CMC reopens with greater expectations

Once a pioneer centre, Nabweru CMC saw its closure on the night of 18th February 2006; bringing telecentre activities to a standstill. Thugs broke into the centre and ran away with three computer monitors and a CPU through the main door, but the guard on duty saw them and was able to recover them.

Synergising the CSCs and Post Offices in India

Recently in a mailing list discussion of the ICT4D community, an interesting discussion was on on how to create synergies between the Common Service Centre (CSC) scheme and the Extra Departmental Post Offices. Participant were discussing whether in addition to distributing mail, the rural post worker (Gramin Dak Sewak) also offer ICT related services.

Sustaining community radio stations

Sustainability is high on the agenda for community radio stations. With an international decline in donor funding, community radio stations are constantly searching for other ways of sustaining themselves. Some community stations are cooperatives and have raised funds through shares. Radio Lumbini in Nepal is a cooperative of 95 members who all bought one share of USD 40. Many stations also sell memberships, with members being offered the right to receive transcripts of popular programmes.
