Ministry's bold steps to take ICT to rural Kenyan people

Going by recent developments, the country has made unparalleled progress in modernizing its information and telecommunications sector.

Kenya now boasts of a modern telecoms sector with the highest subscriber base in the region and a robust voice and data transmission service that is bearing fruit on cost and accessibility.

But according to Information minister Mutahi Kagwe, this progress is yet to meet a substantial proportion of demand for basic ICT services.

India sponsors rural telecentres in Sri Lanka

BANGALORE, July 27, 2007: The problems posed by domestic strife has not distracted Sri Lankans from trying to bridge their own ‘digital divide’ — and opening up the more communication-challenged districts of the island-state to the advantages of the Internet. Their goal of creating over 1,000 ‘Nenasalas’ — rural knowledge centres, all equipped with Internet-enabled computers — by 2008, received a minor boost recently when the Indian Government pitched in with a Rs.6-million package to sponsor 20 of these telecentres “carefully selected to ensure maximum coverage.”

I got an oppurtunity to catch up with Rufina Fernandes, CEO, NASSCOM Foundation, India for a brief interveiw. As CEO of NASSCOM Foundation Rufina's role is to give direction to this initiative, evolve a transparent mechanism to monitor the progress and motivate stakeholders involved in the projects. She is the leading force behind the NASSCOM Knowledge network-a network of telecentres across 10 states in India covering 108 knowledge centres and over 30 partners across the country.
