How Does Change Happen?

How Does Change Happen?
by Jennifer Corriero
How does change happen?
This is perhaps one of those eternal questions
that carries both simplicity
and depths of complexity
juxtaposed in a tension
so bright and dark that
emotions explode and identities blur.
Is your belief defined by your role
or is your role defined by your belief?
How does change happen?
POLICY says the policy maker
MARKETS says the business manager
MASS MOBILIZATION says the organizer
DIALOGUE says the convenor
SYSTEMS CHANGE says the academic
IMAGINATION says the artist
INVENTION says the scientist
INNOVATION says the technologist
INVESTMENT says the banker
DESIGN says the architect
ENLIGHTENMENT says the spiritual guide
RULE OF LAW says the lawyer
CONVICTION says the leader
EDUCATION says the teacher
REVOLUTION says the activist
UNIVERSAL ACCESS says the philanthropist
HEALTHY CHOICES says the coach
AWARENESS says the communicator
DATA says the analyst
CRISIS says the journalist
ACTION says the entrepreneur
PERSPECTIVE says the author
HOPE says the dreamer
NETWORKS says the connector
INSPIRATION says the storyteller
LOVE says the mother
ASPIRATION says the father
LAUGHTER says the child
POSSIBILITY says the youth
REFLECTION says the elder
And so we ask ourselves
Where we stand, where we shine and where we fly.
We ask whether or not
we are defined
by the roles we take
or the collective outcomes that emerge
when our efforts and beliefs collide.
Is it magic or tragic that we disagree?

Change???
This will happen if we could see the changes we wanted. But as far as I can see, I cannot see the change I am expecting for. Today, the unemployed sector cuts through a very broad cross-section of the country. Since late 2007, some 8 million jobs have vanished, and the end is not yet in sight. The ranks of the unemployed have now swelled to nearly 16 million people. In the past, recessions have resulted primarily in blue-collar and low-level retail job losses, with white-collar layoffs accounting for only about 30 percent of total losses. By way of contrast, in the current downturn, nearly 50% of the vanished jobs have been managerial, professional, and skilled white-collar positions. Barring something truly unforeseeable, such as the creation of a whole new economy, we are likely to see an unprecedented recessionary shift toward permanent job losses.

I see it as magic
Absolutely loved the poem. In response to the rhetorical question at the end, whether it is magic or tragic, here's my attempt at a poem in response.
Change is what happens when you put your heart and mind to it
It’s the magic that happens when the passion in your heart meets the creativity of your mind
It’s the delight of merging the opportunity with the dream
It’s the pleasure of observing enthusiasm and determination in progress
This is the process of change …

Change
Change is easy if it's just me: if I want to be healthier, I simply commit to change my schedule to include exercise and better diet. It gets more complicated when there are more people involved and when the "from" is clearer than the "to" (Think of Obama's "change" campaign). However, when there are many diverse stakeholders all in agreement with the need for change (the "from") and the direction of the change (the "to"), then the magic happens. Think Poland's "Solidarity" movement in the 80s. The rich diversity of points of view create a change that is powerful and undeniable.

How well done !
All of the thoughts of all! Put simply in a roll call. Love being the Mother. As Mother Earth asks. But I missed Unity.
If we were able to listen and understand without complete disagreement, the hope would then be the young, aspiring toward that unity.
All dreams then, are put back into perspective...
Great Blog!

The magic of diversity
It’s magic, magic and magic!
This world is made of diversity and diversity is fully part of this world. How would the world be if everyone was the same, looked as, thought the same, having the same role, promoting the same message? Probably, boring….boring and boring….
Each day is a new beginning, and each new beginning is a door open for changing. Changing, transforming our life, community, society and even our own beliefs …. To be able to change is an opportunity for all of us. A gift also…
Change happens by “the collective outcomes that emerge when our efforts and beliefs collide.” But, before all it happens by who you deeply are, what you want to be, and what you are able to do for it.
Each of us contributes to the big movement of change. Individuals with their diversity and power of gathering can create and transform the world through inspiration, imagination, reflection, aspiration, education, action, dialogue, convictions, revolution, hope, possibilities, network, enlightenment, … and so many, but above all LOVE !
Congratulations Jen, your article is so inspiring ;-)

Its all Passion
I believe Change is all about Passion. Its indepth thought to re-define situations, it come with its own force. But very few people give it the chance to operate in them.

Love It!
Reinforces that Change is hard and can't be done in a silo... Reminds us that we, alone, can't truly think out-of-the-box because the box is the culmination of our experiences, education and perspectives.

How Does Change Happen? A Response!
Dear Jen,
On the poem, thanks so much for sharing this!
In response, it might be said that disagreements can be magical or tragic, as well as magical AND tragic, at one and the same time. There is often a Yin-Yang aspect to them, with a bit of one in the other. Change can indeed happen when disagreements and conflicts lead to compromise--or more flexibility in one's viewpoint and interests/needs--and the subsequent ability to move forward (the magic part).
However, too often disagreements lead to stalemate and stagnation, which is the tragic part, esp on the kinds of "life-or-death" issues about which you write.
One key to addressing this is to try shifting one's perspective--so as to see what others are perceiving, thinking, and feeling, the better to be more flexible and to see the "larger picture" related to change--and another is to find ways to communicate and "come to terms" with one another, so that moving beyond stalemate is more possible.
Your poem outlines beautifully many of the different perspectives, and persons/parties with these viewpoints. It can also be used as a "linking" if not "unifying" reference point, for anyone trying to figure out how to "reach" others, build bridges, and get to the "agreement" or "magic" part of the change process.
We should not--as beings of infinite possibilities--define ourselves by or with any one particular role or identity. Neither do we need to be so careful in this way that we do not take a stand, or make visible "where we shine or fly," as you have so eloquently put it.
We are indeed affected, if not moved and changed--as individuals and as a collective--by collisions and clashes, as well as by cooperation and communion.
Here's hoping that we can embrace disagreements and change as blessings, even while we curse them and long with all our hearts for the (perceived) safety or surety of "stasis", and the comfort of conflict-free communications! To be agents and activists in change-related process and outcomes, not merely "accidental" participants or reluctant passengers.
