From the Multilingual Community

We at TIG Multilingual hope to inspire change on a daily basis through our platform which offers culture specific events and opportunities to youth around the world. We asked our team of dedicated online volunteers about their ideas on the role of youth. Here are their insightful responses:

***
Mahsa Taheran
Farsi Language Engagement Coordinator

- How should we celebrate youth as global leaders?
Giving them opportunity to execute their ideas is one way to celebrate youth. Giving them the opportunity to be heard is also important. And recognizing their contributions, even small, is necessary.

- How do you create change in your community?
Well…It’s not easy at all. Change is not very appealing to the governing system in my home country. Attempting to create change in fundamental issues is a threat to personal life in the current political environment. Fortunately, youth are brave enough to attempt. And this is a good occasion to appreciate the efforts of those who lost their lives or are imprisoned for attempting change.
The best way to create any change in a community where the flow of information is controlled to satisfy the corrupt governing system; the best way to create change is to inform. Where having a NGO is difficult, and free media is not accessible, the best asset is going among people and spreading information.

-How do you celebrate your culture?
By criticizing it and improving it by removing negative traditions and ideas, and to strengthen the beneficial ones. Also by introducing it to the world, learning about it, and by improving my mother tongue.

Jessica Zou
Chinese Language Engagement Coordinator

-How should we celebrate youth as global leaders?
It will be great if we can host a festival designed specifically for youth as global leaders. A virtual conference/festival is indeed possible. By participating in the conference, the youth from all around the world can gather together to exchange their experiences as global leaders and to learn from one another.

-How do you create change in your community?
There are a variety of ways that the youth can utilize to create positive changes in their communities. Volunteering is one of the best ways. By helping people, harmony can be established. Starting community projects is beneficial, too. In this way, not only can the youth acquire skills such as leadership and cooperation, they can also contribute to making the communities better places.

-How do you celebrate your culture?
I celebrate the traditional Chinese festivals like Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition, I eat and learn how to cook traditional Chinese food, since food is an inseparable part of a unique culture.

M'Bahia N'Guessan
Online Volunteer Translator (French)

-How do you create change in your community?
By building school libraries in primary schools and high schools, as well as a public library in every town. Also, by training young people in the use of Informatino and Communication Technologies (ICT).

-What inspires you to be a leader?
Poverty and injustice.

Inspiring change in Kenya, one young entrepreneur at a time

Great to see this blog come online. I look forward to reading others' interesting posts in the near future.

The inspiring story I have for you today is less about me, and more about another young person I met through the organization I work for. Arnold (not his real name), a young Kenyan, and I met back in April at my organization's (digital opportunity trust, or DOT for short) training program, ReachUp! In talking with him there, I found out that a year or two before I met him he had tried to open a school for children outside Nairobi, Kenya. Despite the best of intentions, not too many children enrolled, he wasn't able to cover his expenses and ultimately, had to close down.

I was pretty surprised to hear this. Over the short time i got to know him, he showed a great deal of enthusiasm and passion for wanting to help. Over the three weeks of the training, I (and Arnold) learned more about why his school idea hadn't worked out the way he wanted.

He realized he never had a business plan - a document that included answers to common questions such as "how much will I have to charge in order to cover my expenses?", "how can i market the school's programs to the community so they will want to attend?", "are there enough children of the right age in the community to sustain my business?", etc.

He also learned more about financial planning, both for himself and his school-business. This meant important points about why he should keep his personal and business accounts separate, how to apply for, and pay back, a loan, where he could get a loan and the type of documentation he would need.

He also experimented with more ways a computer could help him. He created a schedule to better organize himself. He developed a marketing campaign, complete with flyers and brochures, which included the words and ways he would use to convince people to choose his business. He also made a spreadsheet for calculating his profits and losses.

Arnold really thrived in training - he was a lot of fun to joke around with. But even more, he took the material in training and made it his own. He did a great job applying it to his school idea, seeing right away what he would have done differently that would have improved his chances of success.

However unfortunate, I had to leave Kenya before hearing if Arnold had tried to open his school again. Something positive though was that, in parting, he talked about starting a counseling service (he also has a background in social work) or even (and this is my favourite) a gospel singing clinic. Whatever he ends up doing, I'm confident this time it'll be a success!

About Digital Opportunity Trust
Established in Canada in 2002, Digital Opportunity Trust is an innovator in enabling people to access and apply information and communications technologies (ICT) to create education, economic and entrepreneurial opportunities. DOT's vision is to make these opportunities available to marginalized people, especially women and youth, as a strategy to eradicate poverty, vulnerability and gender inequality. DOT's signature entrepreneurship program, ReachUp!, integrates ICT, life skills, and micro-enterprise development and is delivered in a cost-effective manner, using recent university graduates to train and build capacity of youth in their communities. DOT transforms and supports young women and men as they become leaders of economic and education change in their societies.

DOT currently operates sustainable programs through local offices in 11 countries in North America, Middle East, Asia and Africa. To date, the organization has mobilized more than 1,500 young people worldwide who have trained 200,000 people. For more information, see http://www.dotrust.org
